South America’s second longest tunnel

There aren’t many tunnels in South America. The tunnel Las Raíces is the longest one in the Andes mountain range and second longest of all South America. It has been opened in 1939 and is 4,5 kilometers long. It is located on a road leading from Temuco, Chile to Argentina and connects the wonderful valley of Lonquimay, Chile to the main part of the country.

To use the tunnel you have to pay a road toll and as it only allows one-way traffic you might have to wait some minutes. The valley on the other side is really beautiful and worth a visit – it reminded me much of The Shire. About 450 vehicles pass here a day and an alternative would be an old road called Cuesta de Las Raíces which gives you some nice views but is rather hard to use.
