Hotel Nacional de Cuba

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba located at the Malecón in La Habana, Cuba is a national institution – and was for me the best location for my 30th birthday. It was opened in 1930, closed after the revolution and only used to host diplomats and government officials until 1991 when Cuba reopened for tourists.

In 1946 the hotel hosted the Havana Conference between the Italian Cosa Nostra and the US mafia – later depicted by Francis Ford Coppola in The Godfather Part II. People staying at the Hotel Nacional include Ernest Hemingway, Jean-Paul Sartre, Winston Churchill, Marlon Brando, John Wayne, Marlene Dietrich, Errol Flynn, Buster Keaton, and Frank Sinatra.

Today you can still see pictures of Fidel Castro and visiting celebrities and politicians in the lobby. The hotel has a good bar in the garden, offers an Internet café and a currency exchange office.
