I love living at and with water, that’s why I like Amsterdam, The Netherlands. But the city is too big and too crowded and there is no green close to the water of the town canals. When I was around for a scientific conference I found Leiden – a smaller town I immediately fell in love with.
Leiden is a university town featuring all the nice sides of Amsterdam omitting its flaws. If you arrive at the good railway station you can walk into the gorgeous city center with nice parks along the canals or visit a tiny and beautiful harbour.
In fact the university of Leiden is the oldest in the country and the city was the birthplace of Rembrandt. It counts 250000 inhabitants and one of the nice details in the city are the Muurgedichten – poems written on the walls of houses.
