Duderstadt, Germany is the main city of a Catholic diaspora in Protestant south Lower Saxony. It is part of the Eichsfeld, a region separated during the times of the GDR and now part of two federal states within Germany.
The people are mostly conservative here and are often bound to this region. The impressive town hall of Duderstadt is located in the city center and was built from the year 1302 on. It has been built from sandstone, painted in red and white and it has many beautiful decorations. There have been big restauration works in 1982 and 1987 which have been interrupted by bats living inside the building.
Today you can take a tour through the ancient building: from the wine cellar and the torture chamber up to the towers under the roof. Just get yourself a ticket in the tourist office on floor -1 and your ticket will open a door on the ground floor. A yellow line will guide you through the history of the city and the building. It is not the most impressive tour I’ve ever seen but the views from the top are quite nice!
