Historic site of the uprising in the DDR.
Berlin, Germany.
Platz des Volksaufstandes von 1953 is a commemorative square in Berlin dedicated to the memory of the popular uprising against the East German regime, which took place on 16–17 June 1953 and was violently suppressed by Soviet troops. The site, located in front of the former House of Ministries (now the Federal Ministry of Finance), features a poignant ground-level glass memorial and information panels that recall the courage and tragic fate of the demonstrators. Renamed in 2013 to mark the 60th anniversary of the events, the square stands as a place of reflection on the struggle for freedom and democracy in Germany’s divided post-war history.
