The Verkehrsmuseum in Dresden is one of the city’s most distinctive museums, housed in the historic Johanneum by the Neumarkt. Its roots go back to 1877, when the collection that later became the Saxon Railway Museum first began, while the museum itself was founded in 1952 and opened to the public in its present setting in the 1950s.
What makes it special is the building as much as the collection. The Johanneum is a Renaissance structure from 1586, once used by the Saxon court for stabling, and it gives the museum a strong sense of continuity between old Dresden and the history of transport.
Inside, the museum brings together the four major branches of transport under one roof: road, rail, air and water. That broad approach gives it a much wider appeal than a purely railway museum, because it tells the story of mobility itself rather than just one mode of travel.
Today visitors can see major originals and models, including important railway exhibits, historic aircraft and ships, and a large model railway. There are also special exhibitions and a children’s discovery area, so it feels active and hands-on rather than static.
