Val d‘Elsa

The Parco fluviale dell’Alta Val d’Elsa is one of those places in Tuscany that feels refreshingly different from the usual hill towns and vineyards. It stretches along a lush river corridor between the bridge of Spugna and the district of Gracciano near Colle Val d’Elsa, offering a surprisingly wild and green landscape. Instead of sunburnt fields and cypress-lined ridges, you find clear running water, dense vegetation, and shaded pathways that invite you to slow down and explore.

At the heart of the park lies the Sentierelsa, a well-maintained walking trail that follows the river closely for several kilometres. Wooden walkways, small bridges, and stone paths guide you through a landscape shaped by water over centuries. Along the way, you pass small waterfalls, turquoise pools, and limestone formations that give the river its distinctive character. It is not a demanding hike, but it is engaging enough to feel like a proper excursion rather than a casual stroll.

What makes this place particularly special is the quality of the water and the sense of seclusion you get, even in summer. The Elsa flows remarkably clear, forming natural basins that almost look artificial in their perfection. Unlike many crowded Tuscan hotspots, the atmosphere here remains relaxed and authentic. You encounter locals, families, and the occasional traveller who has done their homework, but it never feels overrun.

On a hot summer day, there is nothing quite like stepping off the path and jumping into the cold waters of the Elsa. The temperature is bracing, almost shockingly so at first, but incredibly refreshing after a few seconds. Sitting on a sun-warmed rock afterwards, surrounded by greenery and the sound of flowing water, you get the distinct impression of having discovered a quieter, more intimate side of Tuscany.
