Las Isletas

The Isletas de Granada, a group of 365 small islands scattered in Lago Cocibolca near the city of Granada, were formed thousands of years ago when the Mombacho volcano erupted, ejecting massive amounts of rock and debris into the lake. Today, these islets serve various purposes, from private residences and vacation homes to hotels and eco-tourism destinations. Visitors can explore the lush vegetation, observe diverse wildlife, and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the imposing Mombacho volcano.

Among the notable attractions in the Isletas is the Fuerte San Pablo, an 18th-century fort built to protect Granada from pirates, which now offers panoramic views of the archipelago. Nature enthusiasts can visit the Isleta de Los Monos, home to a colony of playful monkeys, or relax at restaurants like the Vista del Sol, where guests can lounge by the pool while taking in the tropical scenery. The islets boast a rich ecosystem, with abundant bird life and lush flora adapted to the unique environment.

To reach the Isletas, visitors typically take a taxi to the eastern end of the Centro Turístico de Granada, where numerous boat operators offer charters. The conspicuous surplus of boats compared to tourists is a stark reminder of the decline in tourism following the 2018 political unrest, the global pandemic, and ongoing concerns about Nicaragua‘s stability.
