The Reichsburg Trifels is a castle on mountain Sonnenberg close to the city of Annweiler am Trifels, Germany. It was built before the year 1081 within the Pfälzerwald between Kaiserslautern and Landau. It is surrounded by mountains and forests and you‘ve got a fantastic view from the tower of the renovated castle once you made your way up.
It was an important castle in medieval times and home to the Salier, Staufer and Wittelsbacher. It became well known because in Richard I, the Lionheart, king of England was imprisoned after he was captured during his return trip from the crusades. Leopold V and Henry VI used him to get some money and support for their wars.
How to access the Reichsburg Trifels?
If you get close to the castle you‘ll have to follow a long road through the forest that ends at a restaurant. There you have to pay € 1.50 for parking and you can then walk a very steep path up to the castle. It costs you some sweat but the views and the wonderful castle are worth the effort.
