What to do with an old jail close to the city center? A lot of cities (including my hometown Göttingen, Germany) have to solve this question as these facilities often get to small and are rebuilt outside of the city. Often monument conservation laws prevent to change too much of the building. In Kaiserslautern, Germany they found a good way without denying the former usage.
A jail transformed into a hotel
In 2010 the former Justizvollzugsanstalt Kaiserslautern was sold to a private investor that used 2 million Euros to convert it to a hotel with 60 rooms. From 2014 on everybody is able to have a cell room (with shared bathroom) or a suite in this former jail. The barb wire is still in place, the reception and the hotel bar are behind bars. The views are only good from the upper levels as the high walls are still there.
Slightly strange feelings, good location
You might have a strange feeling sleeping in a former jailhouse but it is a beautiful place with a good design. Best of all is the location directly next to the Japanese garden, close to the Pfalzgalerie and only some meters on foot to the city center. They also have good parking lots and a sushi restaurant within the grounds. A perfect place to explore the city!
