Climbing up and up

As far as I can remember I was visiting St. Paul’s Cathedral every time when I was in London, United Kingdom. It’s the architecture and the atmosphere of Sir Christopher Wrens sacral building that attracts me – but in the past I never went up to the top of the dome of the 111 meters high building. What a miss!

By the way: 111 meter equal 365 feet – one foot per day of the year. You can climb up to the top of St. Paul’s in three sections: the first are 257 easy steps to the whispering gallery, a ring within the dome where you can sit on benches and watch down. From there you can take 119 harder steps to the stone gallery, a ring outside the dome where you can have a look on the city.

The last section is the hardest part: 152 winding steps through narrow tunnels up to the golden gallery – a very small balcony surrounding the top of St. Paul’s. Maybe it is the best place for pictures of London. And it is definitely worth the sweat spent for 528 steps up to the top of the cathedral.
