Grown up in Göttingen, Germany I was used to the tradition of bigger Christmas markets with professional sellers of items and businesses providing food and mulled wine. Now living in a middle-sized town I get to know smaller markets in small towns and city quarters organized by the local community – and I must admit, I love it.
This year we went to Hedemünden, a small town between Hann. Münden and Witzenhausen (between Kassel and Göttingen, if you zoom out on your map). Once a year they close their main road and open their gates for a quite impressive local market. There you’ll get your grilled sausage from the local firefighters, your drinks from the local soccer club and presents from the classes of the local school.
It’s an adorable atmosphere and you know where your money gets to. We got a huge home made advent wreath, some mistletoes and presents you can’t buy somewhere in store. And as a surplus you meet your neighbors and friends – what might not happen that easily on Christmas markets in Kassel, Hannover or Frankfurt. Definitely back next year!
