In need of some fresh air, sea water and sand? Coney Island (the name is derived from the Dutch original name, meaning “rabbit island”) was once really an island in the far south of Brooklyn. In 1940 the passage between this island and the mainland was filled up. Today lots of people come here to relax at the shore.
If you are using one of the D or F trains you are getting to Coney Island station after a long ride through the suburbs auf Brooklyn. From the station you only have to walk some meters to the beach. On the way you can buy food or beach supplies. And you come across an American genuine: Nathan’s hot dogs, home of the annual hot dog eating contest. Strange folks. 😉
Not to miss at Coney Island is the Luna Park, a traditional American amusement park. It is open to the public, you can walk around and look whether you want to try one of the rollercoasters. Or the famous Wheel of Wonders, a Ferris wheel with cabins that do not only turn around in circles but also slide to the center of the wheel. Never seen that before.
When I was at Coney Island, the people where organizing their own big party, playing music at the peer and dancing. It was just a wonderful atmosphere.
