Casa del Arte José Clemente Orozco (Pinacoteca)

If you’re not at Santiago de Chile there aren’t that much museums to visit. The Casa del Arte in Concepción (Bío Bío region) is an exception. It belongs to the University of Concepción and within this not very modern building paintings from different Chilean epochs are on display.

The construction of the building started in 1963 and within the hexagonal building you will in fact find the biggest collection of Chilean works. Most impressive is a mural painting in the main hall. The vast work “Presencia de América Latina” has been painted in 1964 and 1965 and shows the integration of the different cultures. Written on it you’ll find the words of Pablo Neruda:

“Y no hay belleza como esta belleza de América
extendida en sus infiernos
en sus cerros de piedra y poderío,
en sus ríos atávicos y eternos”

The work is today not only a symbol for the University of Concepción, but also for the whole city itself.
