The harbour of Ηράκλειο, Greece has a long history: it was one of the four ports of Κνωσός in minoic times. The Arabs fortified this place and during Byzantine times a tower was built here. In the 16th century CE the republic of Venezia created a fortress to protect the harbor, the Castello a Mare.
It was built buy loading old ships with stones and letting them sink at the desired location. Afterwards the fortress has been built and it was finished in 1540. The Ottomans took over power in 1669 but didn’t make alterations. The fortress is today in good condition and it can be visited from the inside.
