Leiteralm

Setting out from the small cluster of Muthöfe, the Meraner Höhenweg begins with a pleasant mix of pastoral charm and sweeping views. The Muthöfe themselves are a handful of traditional mountain farms and huts perched on a gentle terrace, their weathered wood and stone façades framed by alpine meadows. From here the trail unfurls with generous switchbacks and clearly marked paths, rising steadily through larch and pine where the scent of resin fills the air. Early on you pass scatterings of hayracks and small orchards, reminders of the valley’s enduring agricultural rhythm before the route opens onto high alpine ledges.

Ascending to the Muthöfe with the Seilbahn Hochmuth is an efficient and scenic choice that saves time and energy while offering panoramic perspectives over Merano and the surrounding valleys. The cable car deposits you close to the high path, so you begin at altitude with immediate access to the ridge’s best walking sections. The stretch toward Leiteralm – which gives you a nice target after five kilometres of Alpine hiking – rewards you with broad vistas across the Texelgruppe peaks and down into the Etschtal; underfoot the path is well maintained, interspersed with rocky sections that demand steady hiking boots rather than scrambling. There are convenient places to pause for a rest and a snack while the mountains and cultivated terraces glow in the afternoon light.

The Leiteralm itself sits as a welcoming mountain refuge with a large, grassy terrace and simple, hearty hospitality. It’s the sort of spot where you can savour a local snack or a mug of something warm while watching clouds drift past the jagged skyline – an ideal end point or midpoint depending on your route. The hut’s location gives a fine sense of arrival: a comfortable clearing surrounded by pastures, with the valley sprawling below and the high route continuing along the ridge for those who wish to push on. Facilities are modest but attentive, and the atmosphere is quietly convivial, especially when hikers trade route notes over a shared table.

What makes the Meraner Höhenweg special is its combination of accessible high-altitude walking, cultural variety and consistently dramatic views. The trail threads together alpine scenery, cultivated orchards, and historical hamlets, offering both strenuous ridge experiences and gentler, reflective sections. For variety you can alternatively reach Leiteralm using the Korblift from Algund; combining the Seilbahn Hochmuth for the ascent and the Korblift for the descent (or vice versa) makes for a pleasing round course that keeps the kilometres manageable while maximising scenery and lift-assisted convenience.
