Musei dell’Accademia dei Fisiocritici

The Natural History Museum in Siena is one of the city’s most intriguing cultural stops, especially if you enjoy places where science, history and old-world atmosphere come together. It is closely tied to the Accademia dei Fisiocritici, a scientific academy founded in 1691, and the museum’s collections grew over the centuries through donations, acquisitions and careful preservation.

What makes it especially appealing is that it still feels very much like a historic cabinet of curiosities rather than a modern, minimalist museum. The museum is housed in a former Camaldolese monastery, and its displays preserve a 19th-century style of arrangement, with natural history and historical objects, period scientific instruments and all sorts of unusual specimens spread across several levels of the building.

Among the highlights, the most famous is the 15-metre whale skeleton in the inner courtyard, which has become something of an emblem for the museum. Inside, visitors can also see anatomical collections linked to Paolo Mascagni, botanical displays such as terracotta mushrooms and a lichen herbarium, and archaeological finds including Etruscan cinerary urns from the Siena countryside.
