Atlas

Being at northern Africa for the very first time also meant to correct some images about the continent in my head. Morocco I always connected with beaches and deserts, but never with mountains and skiing. While passing from Marrakech to Äit-Ben-Haddou I had the chance to see the reality while crossing the Atlas mountains. They’re 2300 kilometers long and reach from Morocco via Algeria to Tunesia – with the highest peak belonging to Morocco (the Toubkal, 4167 meters high – close to the highest peaks of the Alps).

During classic antiquity the Atlas was the most western part of the known world and the Greeks believed that the titan Atlas would be standing there holding the sky. When you’re driving through these mountains you’ll first recognize the impressive diversity of the mountains, it is a mountain range with varios shapes and colours; from grey and brown to green and red. I had a privat driver that took me via the Col du Tichka to Äit-Ben-Haddou; a a three hours ride on reasonably good streets. In some areas there were landslides and the road had to be diverted. Just expect policy inspections in major cities along the road; they’ll stop and ask you some questions.
