When it comes to airports at and near London, there a multiple options. Luton (LTN), Gatwick (LGW) and Stansted (STN) are further outside and often used by low-price airlines and vacation flights. Most business trips are probably carried out via Heathrow (LHR) which is the biggest hub, but there is also a good option closer to the city center: the City Airport (LCY). It is located east of Canary Wharf and North Greenwich close to river Thames and directly next a marina; that’s why there is water close to the runway.
By the way, the runway is a special one: it is rather short (just 1508 meters) and because of the airport location planes need to ascend and descend pretty steep which requires a special license for pilots. LCY was opened in 1987 but looks a bit old-fashioned. It transports 4.5 million passengers each year and mostly business travelers to European capital cities. Dependent on where you live or stay in London it might be your airport of choice.
Baggage drop and security check are really fast and the airport is connected via the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) to the city. I had to get there early in the morning and while no taxi was available, taking a bus to the nearest DLR stop and going from there to LCY was an easy task.
