If something around the royal family happens and it is not at Buckingham Palace or Westminster Abbey, then it is probably at Windsor castle – the historic palace outside of London. It is the largest still inhabited castle in the world and the first building on this site was erected back in the year 1078 CE by William the Conqueror. Most kings and queens have shaped the castle according to their needs. Most important parts are the round tower at the center surrounded by a garden, the St. George’s Chapel and the state rooms including the gorgeous St. George’s Hall as well as the doll house of queen Mary.
Known as the British Versailles it is a place you should visit at least once. Some people like to watch the ‘changing of the guards‘ ceremony, but I rather enjoy the silence of St. George’s Chapel which is also the burial place of queen Elizabeth II (next to many other former regents). It was also the place where Charles and Camilla as well as Harry and Meghan were married (William and Kate as well as Elizabeth and Philip did so at Westminister Abbey). You can easily visit Windsor castle by using public transport: from Paddington station take the Great Western Railway to Slough; from there it is only a short hop to Windsor & Eton Central directly in front of the castle. Don’t forget to tap in and out with your credit card as a railway ticket.
