The Turmberg is an only 257 meters high mountain in the city quarter Durlach of Karlsruhe. People get there for hiking, for dining in the restaurant on top or for having a picnic with nice views on the city from the terrace next to the tower. The tower is in fact the last remaining part of the former fortification Burg Hohenberg from the 11th century; it is today used as a viewpoint.
Soccer fans might know the mountain as well because of the Sportschule Schöneck, a training location which was used by the German team of 1954 under coach Sepp Herberger which won the world championship at Bern. If you want to get up this is a very easy task as the mountain hosts the oldest still usable cable car in Germany, the Turmbergbahn. It is just 315 meters long, the track is 1 meter wide and it was opened in 1888. Formerly it was operated by filling water tanks, later it was altered with an electric engine. In the near future the ancient coaches will be replaced and the track will be prolonged down the hill; soon it will look much more modern.
