Erfurt is the capital of the federal state of Thuringia and of course it needs to have a zoological garden. The Zoopark Erfurt is located on the Roter Berg (‘red mountain’) north of the city. It was opened in 1959 and is a home for 1,000 animals of more than 130 species. In contrast to other zoological gardens in Germany it is rather young, but you can see a lot of change there caused also by the end of the GDR.
There are old enclosures that are unused, the old elephant house doesn’t house elephants anymore and ancient signs as well as old paths of concrete are witnesses of the past. But the new compounds built next to them are really good seem to be species-appropriate. In addition to the typical zoo animals I saw a lot of species that are pretty much uncommon in other zoos; therefore it was really worth the visit. You can reach the zoological garden bei tramway five, the final stop is close to the entrance.
