When you’re leaving the city center of Granada, Nicaragua, to the east you’ll reach the Malécon at the Cocibolca lake. Don’t expect a promenade with many people passing along or bars and restaurants. It is the chance to have a look at the lake or to get onto the pier to catch a ship going to the Isletas, to Zapatera or Ometepe. If you want to have a drink you need to walk along the shore further to the south, to a place flagged as Centro Turístico.
But walking from the city center to the Malécon is nevertheless a great idea. On the Calle La Calzada you’ll walk along the bars that attract visitors in the night, you’ll pass a baseball field and beautiful mango trees standing next to the street. And you can do something very typical: buy drinks made of fruit and water (and sometimes milk), sold with ice in plastic bags. They’ll put a straw in and tape it up. You’ll see this virtually everywhere and it is delicious if your stomach is accustomed to the tap water and you can ignore the waste you’re creating. 😉
