Aeropuerto Internacional Augusto C. Sandino

The airport of Managua, Nicaragua, is a rather small one: it has only one runway and six gates, but it transports more than a million passengers every year. The Aeropuerto Internacional Augusto César Sandino (MGA) is the only international airport of the country and located next to the Panamericana, 11 kilometers afar of the capital city. Most flights are operated by Copa Airlines from Panama, but there are also connections with Aeroméxico, with the three largest airlines of the USA (Delta, American, United) and you can go to La Habana and Caracas.

Transport to and from the airport mostly relies on taxis and private transfers. If you need to fly very early there are hotels available on the opposite side of the street. Passing through the airport could be very simple and fast, as there a no long distances to take. But we had some problems with strict COVID-19 inspections (while Europe had dropped mostly all rules already) and as a follow-up with border control. Nothing that you can’t manage, but also nothing that you want to experience. To enter the country non-nationals need to pay 10 USD for a tourist pass.

The airport is named after Augusto Sandino, a guerrillero that fought against the US occupation of Nicaragua that successfully ended in 1933. He was murdered in 1934 by the troops of Anastasio Somoza Garcías, who became US-backed dictator of the country later. The Somoza family ruled Nicaragua from 1936 to 1979 until it was defeated in the Nicaraguan revolution.
