The Fuldaer Stadtschloß is a special castle: it is used by the city administration as the town hall building, but it is also a museum. When you’re visiting it you’ll have to search for the pompous representative rooms of the past between the many simple offices of the different departments of the administration. But it is a quest absolutely worth doing, the rooms are well-preserved with ancient tapestry, endless mirrors and very rich decorations.
The current building dates back to the year 1706 but it was built on the grounds of its predecessor from the 14th century. Both buildings were the home for the religious leadership of the city. Today the secular rulers use this place, for example for the meetings of the city council. You can visit the castle from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 am and 5 pm.
Just buy a ticket and you can roam the building freely, but there is also the option to join a guided tour. Don’t miss the Spiegelsäle on the first floor and the Kaisersaal with access to the garden (you’ll have to take a special staircase from the ground floor, close to the reception). The castle gardens also host the Floravase, an ancient garden decoration that is the icon of the city.
