One of the most beautiful places in the Turkish sector of Λευκωσία is the Büyuk han, the great inn. When the Ottomans took over power from the Venetians they created a caravanserai in the city. It is a rectangular building giving a home to travelers and merchants. Today you’ll find different restaurants inside and can enjoy lunch in this ancient environment.
The Büyuk han was built in 1572 CE and has a small round-shaped mosque at its center. Underneath there is a fountain used to prepare for prayer according to Islamic believe. When the British became lords of the island the building was converted into a prison, later it became a home for poor families. Today, the shops located at the caravanserai are only allowed to sell self-made products.
