National gallery

You can find the national gallery of Armenia at the Republic square of Երևան. It is within the building that also hosts the historic museum and you have to get up to the first floor to enter it. Looking through the very high staircase you can see that there seven floors full of art to discover – and an ancient elevator obviously from Soviet times. Already the building is like travelling in time. In 56 halls you can see Armenian, but also Russian and European art.

Getting there was very interesting because I’ve not seen that much Armenian and Russian art – but it feels like that the European painting brought here from the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, Russia, aren’t the first choice. The staff is nevertheless obviously proud of it. I tried to leave a hall without having a closer look at two works of Marc Chagall. I was stopped and pointed towards them (‘Chagall! Chagall!‘). I knew I couldn’t leave without looking at them – I learned fast that Armenian women always get what they want. 😉

Visiting the national gallery wasn’t only about looking at art, it was also interesting to interact with people there and to observe differences. Like school classes that are taught here while sitting on the floor or students creating reproductions of classic artworks with full equipment. I loved to roam this place and I could have even spent more time here.
