Platz der Synagoge

At this place in the city center of Göttingen, Germany a synagogue was built in 1869. It lasted until the year 1938 when the Nazis burned it down in the night from the 9th to the 10th of November 1938. A gap remained at this place until the year 1973 when a memorial was built.

It consists of an underground place with a Star of David and plagues with the names of the victims. On top there is an artwork made of steel by artist Corrad Cagli. 86 shifted triangles form the Star of David and as they are getting smaller towards the top the memorial looks like a flame.

It is an important tradition that on the 9th of November inhabitants meet here to remember. Today there is again Jewish life at Göttingen and a synagogue (brought from Bodenfelde) at a different place.
