Igreja de São Roque

When standing in front of the church of Saint Roch in Lisboa, Portugal you won’t expect what you’ll find inside. Behind the simply front portal there is the first Jesuit church in Portugal showing all the former richness of the country.

The Igreja de São Roque was finished in 1619 after more than 100 years of construction works. The main hall is surrounded by richly decorated chapels. The most interesting is the Capela de São João Baptista from the 18th century CE. It was built in Roma, Italy and then transported to Lisboa – by that time it was the most expensive chapel in the world.
