Church in ruins

The Convento do Carmo is a cloister with a Gothic-style church in the old uptown (Chiado) of Lisboa, Portugal. It belonged to the Carmelites named after mount Carmel in Israel. The cloister was built between 1389 and 1423.

During the great earthquake in 1755 the church was destroyed but the fundamental structures are still standing today. You can visit a small archaeological museum on the cloister grounds and walk through the old church. I found this most impressive at night when the stars form a new roof for the church.
