I came to Ingolstadt, Germany to watch a soccer match – but as always I also explored the city and found a middle-sized and nice city center. Ingolstadt has 133.000 inhabitants and is the #5 city within the federal state of Bavaria. The city was first named in 806 CE and became a state fortress in 1537 – the results can still be seen on the city map.
The railway station in Ingolstadt is south of the city center. Directly in front of it you’ll find a bus station where every northbound bus takes you to the heart of the city. Exit at “Rathaus” (town hall) and start at the “Viktualienmarkt” – you’ll get some beer and some white Bavarian sausages with sweet mustard here.
I enjoyed exploring the city center on foot, walking through the nice Theresienstraße, visiting the town’s landmark – the Kreuztor – and exploring the new castle in the east of the town. If you’ve got time left stroll along the Danube river and visit the Klenzepark in the south-east.
