Rio de Janeiro International Airport / Antônio Carlos Jobim / Galeão (GIG)

The international Airport of Rio de Janeiro carries different names: Antônio Carlos Jobim, Tom Jobim and Galeão; the shortcode GIG isn’t self-explaining, too. It is located in Zona Norte on an island (Ilha da Governador), 17 km away from the city center.

The airport is served by buses, some going to the Vicente de Carvalho metro station. I would prefer to take a taxi or pre-arrange a shuttle. Galeão is quite a big airport, but I experienced the check-in and security measures as fast. This might be because I was flying late in the evening.

While being in Rio de Janeiro you often see another airport: Santos Dumont. It is between the city center and the Baía de Guanabara. This airport is mainly used for the skylift between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
