I first experienced the airport of Madrid-Barajas “Adolfo Suárez” only as a transit passenger, but this several times. It is the largest airport in Spain, the most important hub of the country and vast in space. You can roam this very modern place for hours, switch via terminals by subway train – but I never found it to be a very welcoming place.
It is located 12 kilometers outside of Madrid and connected to the city by busses and also a metro line. Metro line 8 brings you to Nuevos Ministeries from which you can travel further ahead into the city, for example with line 10 to Plaza de España. Tickets can be bought in front of the metro station. The airport is named after a former president of Spain – Adolf Suárez was the first president after the fascist regime of Francisco Franco.
As a transit passenger I found the airport to be much too large and I had to take too long ways, especially when I had to switch terminals. While getting here as a target destination I had a completely different situation: when arriving at the airport there is a fast lane for people just travelling with hand luggage who are already checked-in. I went through security in under three minutes with zero waiting time.
