If you speak about Haarlem, most people in the world would think about Harlem in New York, United States. In fact that part of the big apple was founded by Petrus Stuyvesant in 1638 as Nieuw Haarlem – referring to a small city 19 kilometers east of Amsterdam.
It is a nice place you can easily explore from its main railway station on foot. Through the city the river Spaarne is winding, that’s why it is sometimes called Spaarnestad – and why it is a nice town (with many beautiful churches). It is not as spectacular as Leiden but also worth a visit.
