The Neue Wache in Berlin, Germany, located at the street Unter den Linden is the central German memorial for the victims of war and despotism. It was built between 1816 and 1818 as a guard house for the royal palace on the opposite side.
It was planned by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Underneath an unknown soldier and a KZ victim are buried. The building contains an eternal flame and the statue mother with dead son (Pietà) of Käthe Kollwitz. In GDR times two soldiers were on guard in front of the building.
