Sumō

I guess everyone knows sumō, the Japanese fighting sports with the massive fighters only wearing belts. Sumō has a home in Tōkyō, Japan – the arena Ryōgoku Kokugikan. Here important official tournaments take place and you can learn more about this Japanese tradition.

Goal of sumō is to push an opponent out of a marked circle in the arena. A fight lasts only seconds and in a tournament hundreds of fights take place. The word sumō itself means “fighting” and the sports date back to the year 712. Interesting are the many rituals and ceremonies connected to it which have only changed little over time.
