Reina Sofía

North and south are concepts that are used in a flexible manor on Tenerife. The island was created by different volcanoes and is Y-shaped. Everything that is rather north of the central mountains is considered north, everything else as the south-side of the island. Driving distances are never really long, but it might be sensible to have an airport north and south of the Teide mountain. The one in the south is the Aeropuerto de Tenerife Sur Reina Sofía (TFS) located in the community of Granadilla de Abona.

In fact, TFS was inaugurated in 1978 as the second airport on the island as TFN reached its capacity limits. Today it is the more important airport with around 11 million passengers transported every year. The Reina Sofía airport has just one runway which is located directly next to the ocean. It is a medium-size airport that can be considered rather efficient, especially if you’re arriving from an European location and don’t even need to go through passport control.

Ground transportation is based on buses and cars. While many tourists have booked packages including flight, transportation and hotel there are also 50,000 rental cars on the island available to visitors. A long hall with rental agencies lined-up is your first stop, the cars can then be found just on the opposite side of the road in a vast car park. The airport is named after Queen Sofía of Spain (reigning between 1975 and 2014).
