The Medina of Fès is car-free and therefore having a Riad close to a city gate or road around is a pure necessity. A good option is the Riad Nazha located in the southern, lower part of the city center. The guesthouse is like a palace and it has a wonderful roof terrace with great views on the Borj Sud fortification. And like always in Morocco you can’t see the beauty of this place from the outside – once you’ve found the door after walking between high houses without decorations an unexpected world opens up.
To get here take a taxi and negotiate well before entering. Taxi driver’s at the railway station of Fès tend to charge foreigners a three times higher rate. After driving the N6 to the city center you’ll see Bab Jdid gate and shortly later the river gate on the left-hand side. It is best to exit on the place next to it and walk the first walkway on the right into the sea of houses. You could also drive a little further and take the second stairs on the left, but that is less convenient.
If you want to explore the city starting at Riad Nazha you should best walk back to the river gate and stop a petit taxi. Get up to the nicely decorated Bab Boujeloud gate – then you only have to walk downhill to get back to your guesthouse. When I got lost in the Medina (and I did multiple times) it was always easiest to walk down until I reached the river or the street. Both form a line you can follow south back to the Riad. Within the Medina you’ll sometimes find signs leading you to Place Rcif, a large open space also located next to the road leading back to Riad Nazha.
