Museu Carmen Thyssen

Andorra is a small country and you won’t expect to find many great museums here. But that doesn’t mean that your visit can’t include some art (and history). Thanks to art collector Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza there is at least a small art museum at Escaldes-Engordany, close to the capital city Andorra la Vella. Small here only refers to the size of the exhibition rooms located on the ground floor of a hotel, the art exhibited here is typically from well-known artists and often includes famous works. But also regional artists are on display at the Museu Carmen Thyssen throughout the year.

Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza was the wife of Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza de Kászon and thereby part of the Thyssen family of industrials. His art collection you might have seen in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza at Madrid, her collection is presented in different places but also at the Museo Carmen Thyssen at Málaga. The reason to have a museum at Andorra is because she has family in the country and of course als tax reasons.

If you like to walk a little bit, you can reach the museum on foot from Andorra la Vella: at Salvador Dalís Noblesa del temps just follow the Avinguda Meritxell (a pedestrian shopping yone) up the hill (for one kilometer, maybe 15 minutes to walk). While I was visiting the museum exhibited a combination of paintings and associated music; it was a rather short visit which I nevertheless enjoyed pretty much. Especially the audioguide was very helpful to dive deeper into the shown works.
