One of the recreation areas of თბილისი is the turtle lake, named because of the amount of turtles found there. It is located at a height of 686 meters above the city quarter Vake of თბილისი. The turtle lake is an artificial lake created from a small mountain river called Varazis-Khevi. It has a maximum depth of 2.6 meters and you can swim in it – but most people come here just for taking a walk around or having a coffee at its shore.
Turtle lake isn’t the most beautiful lake but a trip there is a nice experience already because of the way up: there is an aerial cable car from Soviet times taking you up. It is rather small and narrow (nothing for people with claustrophobia) and it starts close to the entrance of Vake park in the west of the city. Alternatively different hiking paths lead up the hill which is a rather exhausting experience. If you like you can afterwards hike down and have a look at the World War II memorial in Vake park – but the way is uneven and only good wearing hiking shoes.
