Georgian national museum

If you like to visit museums at თბილისი there is one place to be: the Shota Rustaveli avenue starting north of Liberty square. A wide boulevard with historic buildings containing the national gallery, the national museum of fine arts and the Simon Janashia Museum of Georgia, which is part of the Georgian national museum complex. It contains a vast collection of archeological and ethnographic artefacts giving insight into the development of the culture, the people and the state of Georgia.

The roots of the collection go back to the year 1852 and it was heavily influence by Russian and Soviet actions. In 2004 the museum become part of the Georgian national museum and is developed since then towards a more modern representation. The highlights of the collection are gold treasures from far before Christian times and humain remains found in დმანისი, southwest of თბილისი. These remains are the oldest ones proving the existance of humans outside of Africa. If you’re interested in archaeology or the development of mankind you should definitely have a look at this long-lasting collection.
