Close to the city center of Regensburg a long bridge spans the river Donau, the Steinerne Brücke. It was built between 1135 and 1146 and was by that time the only bridge crossing the Donau between Ulm and Wien. The bridge is 336 meters long and eight meters wide. With its 16 arches it was the antetype for the famous Karlův most at Praha (516 meters long, built in 1357).
Formerly the Steinerne Brücke had three towers, but only the Brückturm has survived. You can find it at the southern end next to the beautiful Salzstadel which today contains the UNESCO world heritage visitors center. Additionally the Historische Wurstkuchl is located next to it where you can get a some sausages prepared after a regional recipe.
The Steinerne Brücke was in the past also used by tramways and cars, but this was forbidden after renovation works in 1997. On the bridge you can also find another icon of the city, the Bruckmandl (or Brückenmännchen). In 1572 it was depicted in the book Civitates Orbis Terrarum and became therefore known beyond the city boundaries.
