The Lumière is one of the small cinemas at Göttingen, Germany. Named after the brothers Auguste and Louis Lumière, pioneers of cinema technology, it was opened in 1986 close to the city center, next to the new town hall building. The cinema understands itself as an alternative to the typical multiplex cinemas of our times. It has one single room which is used to show films, for exhibitions and theatre performances.
The organization behind organizes film festivals and open-air screenings at the outdoor pool in the Brauweg. A second location was opened in 2020, the cinema Méliés in the old baptist church. The Lumière itself is located in the Geismar Landstraße 19, a house in which famous French singer Barbara was once living. Next to the cinema you’ll find the Café-Kollektiv Krawall (formerly: Kabale) and underneath the bar Theaterkeller, both left-wing institutions. The Lumière is a wonderful alternative to the huge cinemas with their mainstream program and I’ve never been disappointed when watching a movie there.
