Need some time to relax? Kaivopuisto is a park in the south of Helsinki, behind the modern harbor. From the rocks in the park you have good views on the islands in front of the mainland. There is a small observatory and you can find different restaurants. But mostly the people get here for a walk, for a picknick or to play and do sports.
The history of the park goes back to the 1830s when a spa was created there and used by many people from St. Petersburg (Helsinki was by that time part of Russia). The spa buildings were mostly destroyed by attacks from the Soviet Union in 1944.
Kaivopuisto sees a lot of visitors every day but it is massively crowded on two days: June 12th (Helsinki day) and May 1st, also known as Vappu, the feast of spring, students and workers. While the celebrations of labor day are (unfortunately) declining like everywhere in Europe, the students use Vappu as their day with special drinks and dishes. On this day everyone (not only the students) wears his white student hat that you receive when successfully finishing school.
