Whether or not you like the German Kirmes tradition or not depends on where you grew up. It is quite typical for villages and as I was always living in a city it wasn’t common for me. It typically consists of a fun fair, concerts, a procession of the local associations and bands as well as a breakfast with lots of alcohol in a tent.
The last city quarter of Göttingen, Germany that has a really big Kirmes is Grone. It has preserved its village character and there are many associations that make this happen. As my wife works in a school at Grone she has to participate in the procession while we stand aside the route and collect candy thrown by the procession participants. At least it’s a nice possibility to meet some old friends, check out the carousel and buy some roasted almonds.
