There are lots of things you can bring home as a souvenir from holidays. This year I decided to get a new windshield in Sweden. A small stone must have hit the glass directly next to the frame so we didn’t see it – until from one moment to the other a 50 centimeters long crack appeared in front of the steering wheel. I never had that before.
I drove with reduced velocity to our next stop and called our motoring association and they made a local car repair shop call me. I send them pictures via WhatsApp and they convinced me that it is possible to drive with this windshield: because it is laminated and additional layers on both sides will keep the glass from breaking. The worst thing that could happen would be that the police would make a note or that the crack widens.
I might have just went home with this cracked windshield and have it repaired in Germany – but the crack widened during the next day pretty much and unlike in Sweden (where you typically drive with 70-90 kilometers per hour and a top speed of 110) I knew that I would want to go pretty fast on the German motorway when back home. Therefore and out of security considerations I decided to have it repaired in Sweden.
I called our insurance and they opened a case and told me that the have no explicit partners at Sweden – but I should look out for Carglass. Then some discussions with Carglass started, but in the end I understood their procedure. You’ll have to call in your home country and they then start their International Service Process (ISP). They hand over your data to the colleagues in the country where you are currently staying and they then call you to make an appointment.
I had to drive a bit further because the nearest repair shop had no free timeslots. The windshield was exchanged within three hours (which I spend in the shops and restaurants around) and I wasn’t charged directly. They directly invoiced our insurance at home and send me an invoice for the rest that the insurance didn’t pay (150 Euros). Quite a good service!
