In the year 1540 the reformation hit Hann. Münden, Germany and Elisabeth of Brandenburg, Duchess of Brunswick-Calenberg-Göttingen and Antonius Corvinius turned the former Catholic church St. Blasius into a Protestant one. At the end of the 18th century new Catholic citizens arrived to work for the military and the local industry – therefore a new Catholic church was needed.
An area outside the city center was bought (today directly opposite of the administrative building of the city) and the neo-romanesque church St. Elisabeth was built from 1887 to 1889. It was dedicated to the holy Elisabeth of Thuringia. In World War II the church was hit by bombs but later the community grew because of people arriving from the former East of Germany.
The church is not as much decorated as old Catholic churches but it has a beautiful interior with nice glass windows. We came here for the last religious service of kindergarten – a rather short one, but therefore I had the chance to see this place from the inside for the first time.
