The JenTower is a skyscraper in Jena, Germany and with a height of 159 meters the highest building in the east of Germany. Within Jena it is absolutely outstanding – you can see the tower from everywhere in the city. It was built to have a optically dominating building at the city center and to give the city a more socialistic look.
The building contains offices, a restaurant and a hotel. You can access a viewing platform on floor 29 (switching elevators on floor 28) for a small fee. From there you have good fews on all parts of Jena and the basin – even at bad weather conditions. But beware of heavy wind: my luggage was nearly flying away.
The building was opened in 1972. It was intended to be used by the optics-focused “Kombinat” Carl Zeiss Jena, but when the tower was ready there was no need for it. Therefore the university moved in until 1995 when the building was sold for the symbolic price of 1 German Mark.
