For seven years of my life I was working in different positions for the Studentenwerk in my hometown – an organisation providing social, financial and cultural support services to students. It is partially state funded, students pay a fee every half year and the organization is only dedicated to assist students and provide them with room to live in, food and drinks at the campus and many more necessary things. I really believe that such an organization is necessary and should be supported.
The fact that the Studentenwerke in Germany are natural partners to the universities and that they are mostly the only ones receiving space for restaurants and bars directly at the campus sometimes lead to negative effects. As there are few competitors the quality isn’t always the best. Even if we in Göttingen didn’t have such a problem this seems to have been the case in Kiel.
Campus suite is a coffee bar chain funded by two brothers directly at the university of Kiel. As the quality of food and the atmosphere in the Mensa wasn’t good this institution became an alternative – and nowadays it has spread out across five cities in northern Germany with an additional branch in Vienna, Austria. Maybe this is a good reason for every Studentenwerk to continously monitor and improve the quality of their own services.
