Spanish hinterland

Travelling throughout Andalucía means being mostly at places well prepared for tourism: everybody is speaking English and there are plenty of offers for foreigners. If you want to get away from this, Carmona – located between Córdoba and Sevilla – is a very good stop. This small town with 28.000 inhabitants is located on a mountain plateau and offers medieval fortifications and nice panoramas on the Sierra Morena.

You can park your can in an underground car park at the Calle Paseo del Estatuto and walk along the church San Pedro (with a copy of the Giralda in Sevilla) to the old city gate. There you’ll find the tourist information and the possibility to climb up the old walls. Some meters on there is the green Plaza San Fernando with restaurants or – with a very special atmosphere – the marketplace, Plaza del Marcado de Abastos. Here you can sit outside in the sun and enjoy some coffee; it is a central meeting point for the people of Carmona.

Walking up the hill leads you to the remains of the old moorish fortress which is now mostly used as a hotel. If you follow the road down to the city gate again you can have nice outlooks on the plains and the city center. Carmona is a center for production and trade of olive oil, wine and grains. It is one of the oldest cities in Andalucía.
